Day-Dreaming About My Next Fishing Escape

Day-Dreaming About My Next Fishing Escape

Whether fishing alone or in your favorite stream, there is nothing quite like a fishing escape.  The sound of the ocean waves soothes, just as the rod in your hands is patiently waiting for that perfect catch.  There are endless options when it comes to fishing and planning the perfect fishing escape.  Where will your next fishing trip be?  Will it be a familiar favorite, or perhaps a new adventure?  Let us look at some options while the air is crisp.

Its early, the sun is just coming up over the horizon.  Its rays making their way through the foliage. The fog is lifting and the chill is still in the air.  Water is swirling around as one stands knee deep in the river.  The water is cold, but the air is still.   The tackle box lays open on the river bank and the fly rod is in hand.  The fly line is cast.  All is still.  The fishing escape has begun.  Now the waiting starts.  The mind is alert and ready for any sign of a catch.  The trout or salmon are plenty.  Finally it happens, a tug on the line.  Reeling in the catch tenses the muscles and spikes the anticipation.  The perfect catch.  At the end of the trip, the world seems a better place.  Stress is melted away.

Many fisherman opt for deep sea fishing on vacations, perhaps due the massive size of the ocean, this answer seems most commonplace.  There you are, out on the open sea with the saltwater air and gentle charter.  Nothing but blue sky is above you and turquoise water beneath you.  This type of fishing escape plays to more of the adventurous side for a fisherman or there family.  In the hands of a capable captain, the charter brings you out to where the fish are.

Along the way, dolphins may accompany you- depending of course upon where your fishing trip takes you.  The anticipation builds quickly with the salty wind on your face and the power of the endless ocean underneath.  Ocean fish can be very strong, surprisingly so, making the catch and reel all the more thrilling.  The experienced crew will help prepare to handle even a record breaking catch on most charter ships as well, marlins have been known to take over 2 days to reel in.

Once back at the docks, the picture is taken with the catch of the day (maybe of a lifetime) as the family heads home tired, maybe a bit sun burned. However it is the memories, the jokes, the fish, and the satisfaction that will stick around forever.  At least it will hold you over until the next fishing escape. When planning a fishing trip, deciding on what, where and when, can be difficult given the numerous options available, but it is a problem we all like to have.  Whichever you choose, if you plot your course and set your goals, land a fish and bring your reel, than it’s sure to be a great escape.

Top Five Cruise Destinations to Escape the Cold Winter Weather

What better way to escape those cold weather doldrums than a relaxing cruise to a warm destination. Cruises offer all the amenities of home, and many more. The all inclusive nature of a cruise vacation makes it easy to relax and put the thought of cold weather and work behind you.

Choosing a destination to escape those cold weather blues can be a fun challenge. There are many options for warm weather cruising. Some may choose the more exotic routes such as the Panama Canal, Australia and New Zealand, or even the Nile River. Others may choose the allure of the Mediterranean and the French Riviera. Still some prefer the South Pacific or the Mexican Riviera.

All of those destinations have a lot to offer, but the five destinations below are the top five for the warm weather seeker.

Multi-Destination Caribbean Cruise

This is by far one of the most popular cruise choices. The Islands of the Caribbean have so much to offer. They are as diverse as they are similar. The sandy beaches, blue waters, and lush jungles entice many visitors to jump ship at each port and explore the many offerings.

These cruises range from a 3 day excursion to 10 day island-hopping expeditions. Some cruises focus on only a couple of islands, while others make a swing around the entire area. On board the ship you can enjoy the entertainment and meals, while resting up for the day trips to the islands. Scuba, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, or simply exploring villages and mountain trails, are all examples of some of the adventures that await you on the islands.

While it is impossible to experience all the Caribbean has to offer in one multi-destination cruise, it does allow the traveler the opportunity to sample a little of each culture. This smorgasbord of experiences opens new opportunities for future vacation planning.

Barbados

While we are still in the Caribbean, Barbados is a superb destination. With nearly constant 80 degree temperatures, soft sand beaches, cool blue waters, and lush vegetation, this is a vacationer’s paradise; a relaxing cruise to the island makes it even more enjoyable.

Barbados offers a rich cultural history coupled with many modern amenities. Friendly, laid back people also make this a choice destination. Throw in some great water recreation, posh resorts, and a hopping nightlife and Barbados becomes an even better choice.

Hawaii

Although not well known as a cruise destination, Hawaii has always been a warm weather destination for travelers. The problem for most vacationers was choosing which island to spend their vacation on. A cruise through the islands eliminates that choice. You get to experience them all.

You could choose a cruise that started in Honolulu and then hop to each island for a great cultural and entertaining vacation. The time aboard ship could be used to rest up between visits to the islands. This is a great way to experience all the islands have to offer in a short amount of time.

For those who enjoy the on-ship part of the cruise the best, there are cruises that depart Mexico or British Columbia and float across the pacific for a very relaxing trip. These are much longer excursions. The onboard time can be spent enjoying all the amenities the ship has to offer before embarking on the many island adventures.

Aruba

Another Caribbean destination, Aruba, is well known for its nightlife. Aruba has often been called the Caribbean’s answer to Las Vegas, with its many lavish casinos and upscale resorts. This island relies on tourism to keep it going, with over fifty percent of its gross national product coming from tourism. That explains why the people are so open and friendly.

The trade winds help keep the temperatures down from the extremes, but the arid, dry climate promises plenty of beach weather. Days spent on the beach and in the warm waters, coupled with nights spent enjoying the resorts and casinos equals fun and relaxation. A low crime rate just adds to the air of relaxation.

U.S. Virgin Islands

This popular string of islands is a hotspot for cruise ship tourism. St. Thomas is the port of choice for shoppers. There are many other attractions and beautiful beaches, as well. Many cruise ships focus their trip on St. Thomas alone, and the passengers are not disappointed. However, the other islands cannot be ignored.

St. John is not a common cruise ship destination, but it is an easy ferry trip from St. Thomas. St. John offers a great look at the nature and history of the islands. And, if it is history you are looking for St. Croix is the destination of choice. It is rich in history with many historical attractions. And Water Island, although not on the cruise ship docket, is a short ferry ride from St. Thomas and offers a relaxing taste of paradise. With less than 200 residents it is an unspoiled gem in the chain of islands.

Tips for Picking Out the Right Size Fish Tank

Fish keeping is a fun and often addictive hobby. Once you start fish keeping you will want to keep upgrading and upgrading the size of your tank until it becomes the centerpiece of your den or living room. The right size fish tank for the right size room can really liven up your room design with some light and color and life.

Before you run out and buy a fish tank map out exactly where you will be placing it. One of the first mistakes to buying a new fish tank is to set it up in the wrong place and then have to go through the trouble (and believe me, it’s a lot of work) of catching your fish, transferring them to a new tank or bucket, draining out all of the water in your tank, and then lifting and moving it to its new location. Fish tanks when filled with water are very, very heavy so make sure when you pick your spot, it’s a spot that your tank will be staying for a long time.

Find a place in your house that is not too heavily trafficked, especially if you have nervous or skittish fish that prefer darkness or shade. If you do have nervous or nocturnal fish like loaches make sure you have proper hiding spaces for them to crawl in or under to hide during the light hours of the day. Many fish that are constantly exposed to lots of movement and external excitement can become more succeptible to sickness and injury so make sure your spot is right for what kind of fish you are keeping.

Make sure your fish tank location is not in an extremely hot or extremely cold area of your house. Fish do not survive long if they are exposed to constant and extreme changes in temperature and even if you have a heater in your tank it sometimes isn’t enough to properly regulate. Make sure your tank isn’t near a drafty window or stuffy upper level bedroom or attic. If you have live plants in your tank proper sunlight is a plus but the UV light from your fish tank light can also be sufficient.

There is really no reason to go larger than a 60 gallon tank unless you have a good sized living room or basement to place it in. If you are renting your home or apartment it is also not the best idea to go larger than 60 gallons because constant moving of your tank can be stressful (on yourself and your fish) and difficult. If you follow these easy tips I’m sure your fish will be much healthier and your tank will get even more compliments from the many guests to your dwelling.

The Best Louisiana Saltwater Fishing

If you are looking for excellent inshore and coastal fishing, try Louisiana saltwater fishing, which is renowned as some of the best fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Calcasieu Estuary, which is made up of the Calcasieu River and Ship Channel running from Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico, is a great place for such a journey, especially if you are looking to get your hands on some trout.

Of course, trout aren’t the only gamefish you’ll find in this area. There are plenty of different species to choose from, including speckled trout, redfish, and even a few stray flounder. You may also be able to reel in some sheepshead, ladyfish, and croakers, not to mention the various species of trout like black, drum, and sand trout.

Head out toward the oil platforms near shore and you may be able to locate some king or Spanish mackerel, tripletail, bluefish, snapper, pompano, bull redfish, cobia, jack crevalle, and even sharks. Obviously, with the right equipment and location, Louisiana fishing can offer a diverse crop of critters that will never disappoint an adventurous angler.

The first time you head out on a fishing excursion, you may do well to employ a guide who is familiar with the waters, the location for various types of fish to target, and the best baits to use to get to these fish. One of the favorite fish for first-timers is the bull redfish, also referred to by some as the bull red drum. Why are these species so popular among beginners? What advantage is there to the pursuit of this type of fishing?

First of all, in the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll find that a lot of targeted species prefer deep waters, meaning that you have to take a boat offshore to find them. However, when targeting bull redfish, you can often carry a rod, reel, and ice chest out to your favorite spot on the shore and catch them in the surf. You can achieve success from some areas of the beach, work from a bridge, or even find a nice spot on a jetty from which you can cast a line.

Depending on how long you intend to stay and be patient, you may want to think about carrying along lawn chairs, an umbrella (to shield you from intense sun, especially when Louisiana saltwater fishing in the summer), a radio, refreshments (including plenty of liquids to keep hydrated), and anything else to set up for the day.

Fish Oil — What Every Midlife Woman (and Man) Should Know

One cannot read a newspaper or listen to the radio or TV without fish oil being mentioned. What, exactly, is it? Why all the hype now?  Is it really as good as it’s cracked up to be?  All are important questions; you need to know the answers if you want to stay healthy in midlife and beyond.

What is it?
The healthy substances in fish oil are known as the omega 3 fatty acids. Although the highest concentration of these is found in fish, you can also find  omega 3 fatty acids in other foods such as flax seed, walnuts and canola oil.

Why all the hype now?
Nutritionists and those in the alternative health community have understood the value of omega 3 fatty acids found in fish for years.  Now that the use and value of fish oil has been extensively studied by mainstream medical institutions, more and more physicians are recommending it for their patients.

Is it really as good as it’s cracked up to be?
The American Heart Association thinks so.  They recommend that people consume omega-3 fatty acids from fish and plant sources to protect their hearts. Studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids do the following:

Decrease the risk of sudden death (from heart disease) and abnormal heart rhythms
Decrease the development of atherosclerosis and plaque formation
Decrease blood clots
Improve the overall health of the body’s arteries
And…..
Lower triglyceride (a type of lipid or cholesterol) levels in the blood

What else is fish oil good for?
Fish oil has been found to be of benefit in stroke prevention, Crohn’s disease, lupus, prostate cancer, colon cancer, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis.  Interestingly,
a recent study done in England found that pregnant women who consumed 2-3 servings of fish or seafood a week throughout their pregnancy had children with higher IQ’s than those pregnant women who consumed no fish or seafood.

How should you be getting your omega-3 fatty acids? Is there a difference between fish and other sources?
There are different types of omega-3 fatty acids. The active forms, found exclusively in fish, are called eicosapentaenoic acid  (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Those fish that are highly recommended include herring, sardines, wild salmon and fresh tuna.  It is important to note: Farm raised salmon also contain omega 3 fatty acids. However, many of these fish are treated with antibiotics, have been genetically modified, and/or have been fed fish pellets with dye to give them a pink color. Canned salmon, which is packed in the juices of the salmon and contains bones – a great source of calcium -  is usually made from wild salmon, and thus, may be a better option than fresh farm raised salmon.  Canned tuna can contain a fair amount of mercury, and the levels can be quite variable.

Another form of the omega-3 fatty acids can be found in plants. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil contain alpha-linolenic acid  (ALA), which is converted by the liver to the active forms, EPA and DHA.  Since the conversion to the active components can vary from person to person, fish oil is a far more potent form of omega-3 fatty acids.  It is best to use both fish and flax seed to get omega-3 fatty acids.

If you are interested in taking fish oil as a supplement, look for brands that are distilled and that test for contaminants. Taking it as a contaminant-free supplement will avoid the problem of being exposed to mercury from fish. There are a couple of common brands that do this, Nordic Naturals and Eskimo Oil.
Here is an important tip:  If you have fish oil capsules, and, after piercing, it smells like rotten fish, it is time to find a new bottle. Rancid oil isn’t good for you.

Eating fish is probably the best route for getting omega-3 fatty acids. It is always best to get nutrients from whole food.

What about mercury?
There is the potential for fish oil and, of course, fish to contain mercury. Mercury can be toxic to the nervous system and is particularly harmful to the developing nervous systems of babies and small children.  Because they may contain too much mercury, there are certain types of fish to avoid or eat sparingly.  These include: shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish.

Are there other risks?
Those with bleeding problems should probably avoid fish oil since it thins the blood. Those on blood thinners need to let their healthcare providers know that they are regularly getting fish oil in their diets or taking a supplement so that their bleeding time can be monitored. Some people become nauseated after taking it. Some who take it might find it elevates their LDL cholesterol slightly.  Quality issues with fish oil supplements are huge. It is really important to find a good, mercury-free brand as mentioned above.

What is the recommended dose?
There really isn’t a set recommended dose. Fish oil supplements in the amount of 2-4 grams a day have been found to lower triglyceride levels in the blood.  Most doctors recommend anywhere from 1-3 grams of fish oil a day. For those patients with high triglycerides the recommendation is 2-4 grams a day.

0A
If you are interested in taking fish oil supplements it is really important to discuss it with your doctor or health care provider first.  One more tip, if you find you are burping up fish after you take your supplement, switch to a different brand. There are many, which don’t give you a fishy after-taste!!

The Bottom Line? The hype about fish oil is well-deserved. It can help you stay healthy in midlife and beyond.

Simple Ice Fishing Equipment

Choosing the right gear and equipment for ice fishing is a relatively easy task. There are several key pieces of gear that are essential for fishing out on the ice. The most obvious ones are a fishing pole with lines and hooks and something to cut through the ice. If you forget to bring these pieces of gear then you are not going to be able to go ice fishing at all. So be sure to bring them.

To cut through the ice you are going to either need a saw, an auger which is motorized or not, or some vicious temper to punch your way through a couple inches of ice. If you are humping it out to the ice or walking a long way then I recommend not bring a motorized auger. This is a heavy piece of gear that will weigh you down and provide for a miserable time trudging to your ice fishing destination. If you are walking or just want to save the environment by not using any gas then I suggest that you cut through the ice with a ice saw. This will be much easier to bring along on your hike to the frozen heaven that you are going to be experiencing.

Another piece of ice fishing equipment that you are going to need if you actually want to do some ice fishing is a rod with line and some hooks. There are different kinds of ice fishing rods with different features depending on the kind of ice fishing that you want to do. One style of ice fishing rod is called a tip up. The tip up is designed to “tip up” when you get a strike. That way you won’t have to hang on to your rod for hours on end. For those ice anglers out there that want to keep a firm grip on their rod then I suggest getting a strong pole with a flexible tip. The line you use is completely dependant on what kind of fish you are after. Heavy fish require heavy lines. That seems to make sense.

One thing that I also want to mention is the warm clothing that you definitely want to bring. The only problem with ice fishing is that it is usually pretty dang cold outside when you do it. So you are going to need to bundle up nice and warm. I suggest a parka, two layers of gloves and mitts and the biggest warmest boots that you can possibly get your hand on or feet into. Snow pants are also a great piece of ice fishing gear to keep you nice and warm.

If you are going to be heading out on ice of any kind you also have to think of safety. Ice fishing may not be the most extreme sport out there but it still kills several people every year. Some people fall through the ice and die of hypothermia while a very few ice anglers get lost out there while hunting for rivers and streams to fish on. This requires you to bring a few pieces of gear that could possible save your life. These pieces are ice picks that help you to haul your self out of the ice if you fall through. These are generally just two spikes that are worn around the neck or near the sleeves of your jacket. Another piece of safety gear that you want to bring on your trips is a buddy. There is nothing better than having someone to look out for you, especially while you are freezing cold and wet. I also suggest that you bring a map and compass of at the very least you are going to want a general knowledge of the area. This these tips and suggestions you can have a wonderful time on the ice. Now get out there and enjoy your winter paradise.

Alaska Fishing Cabins ? Pleasure after the Pressure

Exploring Cebu Island ? From the Birthplace of Catholicism to the Stunning Coastal Escapes

In the centre and a bit towards the south of Philippines sprawls a long strip of island called Cebu Island, the capital of Cebu Province set in the Central Visayas Region. Cebu City, the capital of the Cebu Island, is a commercial hub and houses a bustling international port. The Cebu Island is packed with scores of tourist attractions including great beach resorts, historical sites and diving spots.

The earliest Spanish settlement in Philippines is recorded in the Cebu City, which is also considered the oldest city of the country. Cebu City is also called the Queen City of the South, as it used to be a prosperous commercial and trade hub even in the past. A sightseeing tour in Cebu is certain to take you back to the 16th century, the time when Spanish seafarers first settled here.

Cebu City nestles many colonial buildings and religious venues influenced by the Spanish. One of the most famous religious and historical attractions here is the Magellan’s Cross. It was installed under the direction of Ferdinand Magellan, following his advent to Cebu Island. Presently a new cross is exhibited at the chapel called the Kiosk, in the vicinity of the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino. The original cross is secured within another wooden cross and rests on a concrete pedestal in the heart of the Kiosk. The interior of the Kiosk’s conical dome display some striking murals depicting stories of the baptism.

The next door Basilica of Santo Nino, also called Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, is considered as the oldest church in the country, with a baroque facade built in the 16th century. The Santo Nino, a statue of the Child Jesus, is enshrined here. The basilica houses a fine museum displaying antiques, statues, large rosary, Santo Nino’s cloak, gifts and vestments. Cebu boasts of one of the oldest and smallest Spanish ports known as Fort San Pedro. The city is also home to Asia’s birthplace of Catholicism, the Cebu Cathedral.

Mactan Island sits only a few kilometres from Cebu Island and serves as a great tourist attraction in Philippines. In Mactan you will come across a lifelike statue of Datu Lapu-Lapu holding a tribal shield and a sword. He was a daring chieftain of Mactan Island who fought with his fellowmen against the Magellan’s army and suppressed them during the Battle of Mactan. The monuments Magellan Shrine and Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Mactan were built to commemorate this battle.

Mactan Aquarium in the Lapu-Lapu City in Mactan Island is an excellent place to explore a wide variety of fish and learn more about them. You will see sharks, star fish, corals, jelly fish, urchins and numerous exotic fish representing marine life from the Filipino portion of the Coral Triangle. This triangle is a territory in the Pacific Ocean and is recognized as a global hub for marine diversity.

Mactan hosts more than 70 diving spots to view thriving coral reefs. You can take a glass boat ride, scuba dive or snorkel to explore the vibrant corals, the home of myriads of elusive beings. Mactan and many islands near Cebu Island provide great beaches to sunbathe and simply relax.

Things to see and do in Cebu Island are countless, and range from sightseeing historical sites with Spanish influences to exploring the rich underwater habitats. You can easily find accommodation at an exclusive Cebu resort spa like Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa Cebu. Enjoy this resort’s sumptuous comforts while indulging in the warm tropical sun, turquoise sea and the dazzling white beaches in Cebu.

Canadian Fly In Fishing And Hunting Guide

Vacations come in all shapes and sizes; some people enjoy going from a museum to an exhibit to a gallery; others like to soak up the heat on a beach in the Caribbeans; while others prefer to avoid the scores of people entirely and go after some game. For those Canadian Fly in Fishing and Hunting is the best choice. I will share with you what you can expect, what you should bring, what you should avoid, and which companies you should plan your trip with. You can think of this as a Canadian Fly in Fishing and Hunting Guide.

My name is Jeremy Wadford, I’ve been fishing all over North America and over the past few years I have been on a couple of those fly in fishing trips to Canada. I enjoyed it; caught some walleye, lots of pike and a 28lb trout!

I’m telling you, this was a great trip and you should go! Leave your wife, your kids at home, take your buddies and fly in to Canada for a week to have the best fishing and hunting time ever. Seriously, ever! This is unlike any weekend trip out of town. The feel is completely different when you cross the border to hunt and fish in Canada.

What To Expect On Your Canadian Fly-In Fishing Trip

It’s a good idea to do your research first. There are 2 main companies that you can plan your trip with (see “Who To Plan Your Canadian Fly-In Fishing Trip With” below), and the staff at each one is well prepared to make your fishing trip an amazing one; so expect to be well taken care of.

Expect a boat and motor, solar-powered lighting, hot and cold running water, showers, fully equipped kitchens and comfortable furniture. The Clean Cabin Deposit (typically $100) guarantees you well maintained cabins with ample room for up to 8 adults. As a rule satellite telephones for emergency use are provided, but it’s still a good idea to make sure that they do have them at all their cabins, or at least at the cabin you’ll be staying in.

When we planned our first Canadian fly in fishing and hunting trip we found that a lot of the following things were provided to us:

Wide, heavy duty 14″ Alumarine boats with swivel seats
6 – 15HP motors and unlimited gas
Marine safety equipment (emergency kits)
Paddles
Anchors
Landing nets
Minnow buckets
Life vests/life jackets (they are mandatory, and whenever they are not included, they are available for rent)
Kitchens with cooking and eating utensils (pots, pans, plates, knives, forks, etc.)
Large propane refrigerators, stoves and freezers
Solar powered lights
Backup propane lights
High pressure solar water system with hot and cold water
Shower and urinal
Wood burning stove for heating
Firewood
Screened-in porches, 200 square foot decks /w benches
Covered area with propane and Charcoal BBQ
Fish cleaning areas with running water
Satellite phones accessible to each camp
Flight checks of our camp (should we need it, assistance would be quick)
Wooden walkways from dock to cabin

*When you plan your trip, read carefully what is provided, and where, because while the above is pretty much standard, we misread the provided features and learned only after-the-fact that some items are provided in select cabins. While I expected the items I listed below, they were unavailable to the cabin we booked. So for our next Canadian fly in fishing trip we will book the cabin with the following provided:

Canned pork & beans
Canned corn
Canned green beans
Canned fruit cocktail
Ketchup, mustard, relish
Flour & sugar
Salt & pepper
Dish soap & bleach
Mr. Clean, S.O.S. & garbage bags
Paper towels & toilet paper

Any problems with equipment you can expect to be taken care of quickly. The guys running the place really want to leave you with a Canadian fly in fishing experience you will brag to your pals about, so they are quick to fix your motor, provide you with gas and help you out in every possible way. When I went, they marked our map and spend some time with us to help us along, before we headed into the lake.

What To Bring On Your Canadian Fly In Fishing Trip

First remember that whichever company you chose, you are almost guaranteed plane transportation in and out of camp from Red Lake. This means that there will be certain limitations on how much you can bring. The limit is most likely to be 100 lbs per person. The weight restrictions are very strict, so plan your fishing trip well!

The bare minimums include duffel bag or backpack for personal gear including clothing, 1 sleeping bag (or blanket), 1 tackle box and 1 small cooler for the boat. A total of 4 items per person and that should be it for a total weight of 60 pounds per person.

General/Personal

Warm clothing and rain
Mosquito coils
Insect repellent and sunscreen
Sleeping bag or blankets (pillows are often provided)

Generation Gap Surfing in Bali

Dawn Breaks over Bali

Six hours earlier, the noise of waves crashing ashore had woken me from a deep sleep. Mounting excitement propelled me from the bed when I realised from the volume of sound that the waves were substantial. It was still dark, but I knew that I could catch the dawn from my suf-board if I left immediately. A while later I was several hundred metres out to sea, battling my way further out and, between soakings, watching the dawn paint the sky from a celestial palette of pinks, yellows and crimsons. I was totally alone and knew that this was not safe or sensible, but I did not care. I felt that my daring to be there gave me a kind of spiritual ownership of the place and that this feeling more than compensated me for my almost complete lack of other worldly possessions – the most valuable of which I had with me, my board. I usually love my board, but sometimes I blame it when I fall off and swear at it big-time. One of the reasons I love my surf-board is that, after I’ve blamed it for my shortcomings and sworn at it, it never holds it against me or sulks in any way. I can just jump on and ride away, as though nothing had happened.

I am now having lunch with my Dad, who has flown in from Perth, en route to a business meeting in Tokyo, to see me and presumably to try and coax me into his company – or any company at all, provided it’s not the company of surfers. He’s not had much luck at this task. Six months ago, when I was having a blast, neglecting my university studies in favour of chasing Perth surf, he tried pleading that I should pack in surfing as my Mum was worried sick that I might be eaten by a shark. This happens to a fair few surfers down-under. I felt a bit sorry for both my parents when their plan rather back-fired on them: I agreed that it wasn’t safe, quit uni and came surfing here instead. I just hope he hasn’t heard about the surfer who washed up here drowned the other month. I think a blow on the head from his board after a major wipe-out was probably the cause. I’ll probably not make an old corpse myself, but I don’t care. My Dad’s hotel, the Maya Ubud, is quite a contrast to mine. It looks like a palace compared to my lodgings, but then so does everywhere. I look again and realise that I’m not doing the Maya Ubud justice by including it with ‘everywhere’; it really is tastefully and typically Balinese, whereas mine is about as basic as you can imagine – thin mattress, fly-sheet, fan, shared cold shower.

My Dad asks me what I think of the Maya Ubud.

“It’s lovely, Dad, exquisite”.

“Wouldn’t you like to be able to afford to stay here?”

“Not really, Dad. I think that right now, at this very moment, I’m enjoying being here more than you are, because you’re used to staying in these places, whereas for me to come here and eat this fab food is a really special experience”.

I suddenly remembered that Dad gets offended when I put his values down that bluntly. I had been talking to him just as though he were one of my surf buddies. To try to make amends I quickly added “I really appreciate your coming all this way to spoil me, but honestly there’s nothing I need that I don’t already have. I really enjoy my life here. Better than that, I love my life here, because I always live in the present. Everybody knows that living in the present is the key to contentment.”

“Son, if you live in the present you’ll never achieve anything in life. In order to achieve things it’s necessary sometimes to dwell on the past and worry about the future”. I had to disagree. “I’m sorry, Dad, but I totally disagree .There’s no intrinsic meaning in achieving anything anyway, so why should I bother? I might as well live in the present and be as content as possible.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve had this conversation. My parents are so cool about my complete rejection of their value system, I really respect them, not just for their attitude about this issue, but also for all they’ve done for me in the past. Actually, there is one source of intrinsic meaning in my life – she’s called Jenny and she’s from California. In order to go and be with her in the States, I’ve realised that I’m going to need to go back to Oz and get some money together. So I discuss this with my Dad, who’s delighted.

“I wasn’t so different from you when I was your age” he said.

“Not quite so idle, but not far off it” he continued. “In those days there wasn’t a sub-culture of idleness, so people who wanted to laze about had to laze about with low-lifes. The problem these days is that civilized young blokes like you can laze about with other decent young people, so it’s much more enjoyable. “

“Your mother’s more worried about you than I am. I reckon that you’ll get bored rigid with this sooner or later. Besides, you said you were doing this to reject meaninglessness, but your life of pleasing yourself has got to be the most meaningless life imaginable. I stopped idling around when I set up home with your mother. I spent over a decade in jobs that were often rather dull, but it never really bothered me, because I knew exactly why I was doing it, I had all the meaning I could possibly have in my life, in providing for you and your sisters. So I’m not too worried, I reckon what you need is to really fall for some woman, then start imagining what you could do to make her as happy as you possibly can.”

Quality Fish Oil

Over 1 billion people rely on fish as their primary source of protein. Additionally, certain types of fish are rich in the essential omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These essential fatty acids are woefully lacking in the American diet. Health authorities around the world are recommending higher intake of fish oil for the prevention of heart disease. The question arises – what is quality fish oil?

As a formulator of dietary supplements I have watched the fish oil dietary supplement market unfold over the past twenty years. It became obvious during this time that the DHA component of fish oil was by far the most important oil. If you would like to read an overview of the significant health benefits of DHA, click here.

The reliance of so many people on fish as a food source raises legitimate questions of sustainability. Indeed, there are various countries that seek to operate outside the boundaries of agreed upon sustainability fishing levels – and there are always profiteers doing the wrong thing for a buck. Fish farms raising salmon or tuna use significantly more smaller fish to produce the salmon or tuna, making such fish a poor choice for sustainability.

Thankfully, within the dietary supplement industry, there are a number of high quality producers of fish oil raw materials that not only follow the international fishing rules and standards, but also seek to set quality and sustainability standards for the industry. And among a number of fine quality companies Wellness Resources has selected what I feel is the best supplier.

As a clinician who counts on a dietary supplement product to actually do something beneficial, the first concern is simply getting enough DHA in the product. The DHA content of fish oil ranges from 10% – 20% of the oil, depending on the fish.

At Wellness Resources we go the extra mile and provide a fish oil product that contains 50% DHA. This means there is less of the blood thinning EPA and other unneeded oil components. The ability to concentrate DHA to this level is a major accomplishment. To do this, you must first start out with a fish that has a lot of DHA. All of the DHA in our products comes from sardines and anchovies.

These small fish are in abundance in the oceans. Our specific fish oil raw materials come from ocean waters around Norway and North America. Sardines and anchovies feed on phytoplankton. This means that they are low on the food chain and have far lower starting levels of mercury, lead, PCBs, and other toxins.

The company we use is a vertically integrated operation, meaning the fishing business is linked to the fish oil production business – which means quality control from beginning to end. Additionally, the fishing that is done follows strict European guidelines for allowable amounts fished, which helps to ensure that there are enough mature “reproductive” fish left in the ocean to sustain the numbers of new fish each year – thus preventing over-fishing. The company strictly complies to international sustainability standards.

It takes a very select starting fish oil raw material to end up with a product that is 50% DHA. You just can’t make this product out of any old DHA-containing fish oil. Only the best quality raw material will do.

Our fish oil is produced in a state-of-the-art Norwegian facility that is dedicated only to the production of fish oil products. The proprietary production process is based on many years of skilled experience. The factory complies to the very strict Norwegian Medicines Agency cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and uses production quality standards that exceed the European Pharmacopeia and the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED) Voluntary Monograph. Production systems comply to the U.S. FDA’s seafood Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points regulation 21 CFR 123.

The high tech production equipment and storage tanks form a closed, nitrogen-filled system, with no air (oxygen can cause oil to deteriorate and go rancid). The production process takes 6-8 weeks and is done under vacuum, never under high temperatures that could also damage the oil. During this process the undesirable oils are removed and the important DHA is concentrated to 50%. At the same time, a proprietary molecular distillation process is undertaken to ultra-purify the high quality starting raw material.

This special purification technology is able to reduce metals like mercury down to the limits of current scientific detection, meaning virtually none. For example, the Eurpean Pharmacopeia sets mercury levels in fish oil to be no higher than 0.5 mg/kg. The GOED voluntary monograph sets mercury at 0.1 mg/kg. The ultra-purification technology used in our fish oil product drops mercury levels to .005 mg/kg, which is the current detection limit of modern equipment. Likewise, levels of lead, PCBs, dioxins, furans, DDT and other pollutants are reduced to ultra-trace amounts – providing you the purest fish oil in the world.

The gentle and efficient production process results in negligible levels of oxidation, meaning that the oil is not processed in a way that damages it. The final product has very low peroxide and anisidine levels, ensuring that the fatty acids are in very good shape and have excellent shelf life.

One of the commitments of Wellness Resources is to the health of our customers. In this regard, we do everything we can to select the finest quality raw materials for your health. Every nutrient has a different story and can be purchased in varying levels of quality, including fish oil. As a family business, we are concerned about the health and well being of you and your family members. It is our top priority to deliver to you the best possible quality in the health products you count on. The quality of the DHA you take does make a difference.

Best Three Tips to Successful Idaho Steelhead Fishing

Regardless of which task you will be dealing with, having good and sound advice will help you. Using a guide, a “track to run on,” may help greatly to get it done. The three basic tips set forth in the following paragraphs can help you achieve a successful Idaho steelhead fishing. For those who follow these tips you may really be expecting much better outcomes.

While you often have a guide, usually assigned by most Idaho fishing lodges, along when you are fishing for steelhead, it is actually necessary that you yourself have the knowledge to do things right. If you don’t, the outcomes could, in fact, be upsetting. Like any other fisherman, experienced steelheaders have their own methods of landing and catching a lunker.

1. Jigs have to be pink, black, chartreuse, reds and purple. Or, if a jig is not available, just work with a hook with shrimp or sucker meat. You must also have a bobber, which is needed to help keep the jig from getting dangled up in rubble and debris on the bottom level of the stream. Position the bobber to keep the jig approximately six inches to one foot above the stream bottom.

2. Get some steelhead eggs (roe), place them in a red mesh fabric and tie it to the fish hook. Place a sinker about one foot to eighteen inches above the line, so the eggs will float off the bottom. Almost as important as making sure that jigs are of right colors when you’re out for a steelhead fishing is to ensure the eggs and sinker are placed correctly. I am telling you, it’s not something to miss out. It will help you catch the lunker, which is something every person involved in Idaho steelhead fishing desires for.

3. Make use of streamer flies in reds, yellows, pinks, black or orange. Tie some crystal flash in the tail. Woolly buggers or any kind of leach pattern in darker colors should work. Some steelheaders hook a tiny piece of shrimp or night crawler to the hook. As a final point, when fishing you’ll need to be sure to use streamer flies. These flies must be weighted in order to get them near the bottom of the stream, which is also a required component in Idaho steelhead fishing.

Like your fellow steelheaders, your ultimate goal is to catch that big steelhead fish. You certainly can accomplish that goal by paying attention to the lectures of your guide and by being attentive to the strategies in this article.

Are up for some Idaho steelhead fishing? Consider going to Shepp Ranch, an Idaho guest ranch that offers the best variety of fishing opportunities in Idaho.

Turtle Aquariums: A Turtle Tank Set Up Differs From A Fish Tank!

The home of your turtle is referred to as the housing or habitat, one of the vital necessities of your pet. There are two main types, namely indoor, referred to as a turtle aquarium, and outdoor housing, often a garden pond.  Although the indoor enclosure has similarities with the fish aquarium, it is not the same. Novice turtle keepers should keep this information in mind.

One of the most important differences between the two is the water level containment.  Fish are aquatic creatures surviving in water alone, while turtles need both land and water. For this reason, fish tanks are filled completely with water, while turtle tanks are only half filled. Different turtle species require their own precise amounts of water according to their size, and these amounts must be accurately calculated and rigorously maintained. Watch your turtle – it should have a high enough level of water to enjoy swimming, but the turtle should also be able to stand in some shallow areas of water, and have a rock or log to climb out and bask on to dry off.

When purchasing a turtle aquarium, make sure that you consider the size your turtle will grow into as an adult. Turtles normally grow three to even four times their infant length as they mature. Therefore, the most ideal aquarium size for your pets is three to four times the length or size of the biggest turtle. The tank width must be twice as large, and the height should ideally be 1.5 to two times its length. Furthermore, choose a tank which is eight to 12 inches above the highest point the turtle can reach in order to prevent it from climbing out and escaping.

When buying turtle tank accessories,  make sure that the welfare and safety of your turtle is prioritized. Never consider placing any rough stones in the aquarium, for they may potentially injure your pets. Select smooth stones instead. Stones which are found on roadsides must be sterilized before placing them inside the tank. All other store-bought accessories should be cleaned every week to ten days. An easy way to stick to your cleaning schedule is to take out and disinfect the accessories when you change your tank water.

Create an elevated place to allow your turtle to bask, either by piling smooth rocks or aquarium gravel on one side of the turtle tank. Other materials to use to create or enhance this basking area are Styrofoam™ or floating cork, to improvise a bridge or plastic raft. The other side of the tank should be used for swimming holes.

A proper filtration system is likewise a necessity.  When you make sure that the cleanliness and sanitation of the tank are maintained, you insure the health of your pet. An ideal power filter, which you can submerge in the water, is recommended. This submersible filtration system makes use of foam as the means of filtering. Rinse the foam using cool and clean water every week.

The purchasing and setting up of the turtle’s aquarium are the most important tasks for beginner turtle keepers. Make sure that before you acquire a pet turtle, you are ready to give it proper housing the moment you bring it home. Remember, the best habitats for turtles are the ones that meet their daily needs by mimicking their habitat conditions in the wild. Your turtle needs space, soil, plants, food, water, and proper temperature control to ensure a long and healthy life.

Alaska: A Fishing Dream Spot

Fishing in Alaska is a dream come true for many an angler.  The air and environment is clear and beautiful.  The water is sparkling and what lies in that water is what has hundreds of people flocking to the state for the best fishing of their life.  It is not unheard of to land a 35 pound King Salmon here and you will be amazed at the fish that are teaming in the waters.

In fact, you can catch that king salmon at up to weights of 50 pounds!  You’ll also find huge fish including halibut, northern pike, Graylings, shiner perch, sturgeon, herring, and many, many more.  Cod, walleye, flounder, crabs and shrimp are just teaming for you.

As for where to find them, you will need to check out the southeast region of Alaska.  There are many locations to fish here and you can target just the fish species you are after.  This is a warmer winter area of Alaska as well.  But, still summers are cool and excellent for getting halibut on the move.  Salmon migrate here to spawn and you’ll find a wide range of trout here too. Head to the locations between Bristol Bay and Cooper River where you’ll find many fish.  You can also fish the coastal waters for halibut and ocean fish.

Make sure to check out Lower Cook Inlet.  This is a popular location where you will be able to find Dolly Varden, a type of salmon.  You’ll also find trout too in this area.  You can dig for clams or fish for halibut and salmon off the coast.  Another excellent location is in the Western and arctic regions.  You’ll catch your fill of trout, pike, graylings, char and burbot here.

What To Take With You

Of course you will need your rods, freshwater and saltwater depending on where you head.  Make sure to take twice as much tackle than you think you’ll need.  Flies, weights, lures, a net, fishing line of several types, as well as pliers, waders, maps, and a compass are also necessary.  Make sure to stock your first aid kit and include enough water in case you can leave the fish!  For clothing, don’t forget you are in Alaska and you do need warm clothing, a fishing vest, sunglasses, hiking books, bug repellent and sunscreen.  Check on getting the right fishing licenses too.  Don’t forget your camera because these are truly some amazing locations not to mention the size of fish you’ll catch!

For bait, take a wide range of live bait.  This could be prawns, night crawlers, crayfish, and razor fish.  Look for frozen baits too.  In artificial, take with you a wide range including lures, flies, streamers, spoons and spinners.  Go for natural bit from the area if you can.  You’ll find plenty of locations to purchase it in the area and of course you can find your own if you like.  Don’t over bait though.

When heading off to fish in Alaska, it’s often wise to take with you a professional or to book a tour.  These individuals can help you find the hidden locations where your fish are lurking.  And, they can make sure that you see some of the best fish out there.  Take the time to check out a few locations online and insure the organization’s quality.  Then, head to the beautiful Alaskan country to get in some of the best fishing of your life.
